Bio

A professional theatre artist for more than, 25 years Matthew is an award winning actor, director, playwright, designer, and puppeteer. A proud member of Actors Equity Association, Professor Johnson holds a MFA in Theatre Performance Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a BA in Theatre, Creative Writing and Studio Art from Morehead State and has been teaching at EKU since 2014. In 2018 Matthew founded the Appalachian Shakespeare Center at EKU and currently serves as its Director. App Shakes produces the annual Loose Canon Project with Appalachian students as well as Shakespeare in the Ravine and Shakespeare Under the Stars. A member of the resident ensemble at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Matthew also served CSC as Associate Artistic Director. A native of the bluegrass, Professor Johnson lives in Versailles with his two children and maintains an active professional life on stages across the country.
