Julia and Jane are best friends and both happily married for five years, but before their marriages both had brief affairs with Maurice, a charming Frenchman. Maurice is returning to London and has asked to visit them both, and the women don't know what will happen. Sir Noel Coward spins this mad-cap, comic tale as only he can; Julia and Jane quarrel, make up, get high on champagne and quarrel again... all before Maurice (and their husbands) arrive!

Young Mary Lennox is orphaned by a cholera epidemic in colonial India and sent to live with her brooding, reclusive uncle in England. There Mary begins her search for friendship, love and an understanding of the past in her uncle's locked garden.
